Boy Banned

When the only way to win is to hide who you are, how far are you prepared to go?

Reuben “Angel” Jacobs is one step away from giving it all up. Losing a place in the live finals of Sing UK almost kills him. He has no choice but to go home and work for the family business, even though it means giving up his dreams and proving his old bullies right.

Corey Dixon is a rocker at heart. Being on the spectrum means that making sense of other people’s ‘normal’ is hard in itself, let alone in the chaos of a high-powered competition. Singing is his safe space, the only way he can think through the noise in his head. Messing up his audition for the live shows means his journey is over, and it’s the worst day of his life.

The judges throw them a lifeline and create a boy band from the near-miss hopefuls. Angel, Corey, and three others are put together in a room and offered the chance to sing as a group. Agreeing to become part of the new band means Corey has to hide who he is and what Angel has come to mean to him.

Is winning worth the price Corey and Angel have to pay?

Excerpt:

“Filming in five, four….”
Brianna was clearly the leader in this particular choice. “Hi, guys,” she said strongly, her tone belied by the fluttering of her hands around her face. She had assumed the “we have terrible news” expression. Both the male judges had relaxed back in their seats.
All five of the contestants said hello back; the other four were as worried and subdued as Corey sounded to his own ears.
“Okay,” she began, “boys, boys, boys… you all know that the auditions at boot camp weren’t so good. Mistakes, wrong song choices, emotions getting the better of you….” She trailed off and looked into the distance with a soft pout. She was acting out the whole disappointment thing and was a freaking expert at it.
Corey shifted from one foot to the other. His head was banded with the start of a headache, which he was convinced would deteriorate into a migraine if he didn’t get some meds soon. That would just be the perfect shitty end to the perfect shitty day.
“We’ve considered you a lot. You’re the hardest group of singers, and it took us a long time to come to a decision.”
Another dramatic pause, in which Corey imagined music would be inserted for added drama. He stopped breathing, waiting for her to finish what she was going to say. Maybe, somehow, they’d been given the chance to prove themselves again, and she would say they were through.
She shook her head slowly. “Sorry, boys. We’re not taking you through as solo singers to the live finals.”
And there it was. Corey’s dream gone. Finished.
He’d messed up worse than the worst fuck-up ever, and the disappointment was visceral, unforgiving, heartbreaking.
Double K let out a harsh sigh and then draped himself all over Angel, who didn’t push him away, simply held him gently.
At least Double K wasn’t crying.
Corey wanted to cry.
Not at the fact he’d come this close to getting to the live shows, but the fact it was all his own fault that he’d blown his audition. If only he’d stuck to Kasabian, or maybe another old Bon Jovi, he’d have made it through.
Corey didn’t cry, though. He let himself feel the pain of disappointment, then looked to the stage manager as to what they were going to do next. If the cameras caught him at that moment, they would see a man who’d been dealt a blow but was stubbornly determined not to give up.
“But—” Brianna was talking again, saying something about wildcards and judges’ choice and compromise. “We have our wildcard choice, and all five of you made the list as being just outside those we selected who made it automatically to the shows. You’re all good, but you just didn’t raise your game enough to make it through automatically.”
Corey tuned back in. Were they going to make the five of them repeat their performance? Was he still in with a chance? He was way better than Skinny, Puppy, and Double K. Only Angel was anywhere near his skills vocally. Angel, who was still supporting Double K, which made Corey’s skin itch with a prickle of resentment. He pushed it away.
Hope bloomed inside him at the thought he might have another chance. He wouldn’t mess up again. He could do this.
And then, as suddenly as hope began to grow, Brianna dashed it by using her serious tone, the one that had viewers falling for her all over again.
“We’d like you to consider grouping together, becoming one band, and going through to the live finals as our wildcard choice in the group category.”
Stunned silence.
Double K was quiet, and Puppy had even stopped swearing quietly under his breath.
“Go,” Brianna said. “Take some time. Talk it over.”
In a daze, his chest tight, Corey left the stage, the last of them to leave, following Double K back into the large room they’d just been sitting in. Cameras followed them in, and all of them stood looking at each other.
“Okay, guys, this is a big decision,” the showrunner said. “We’ll keep the cameras out of the room. Let me know when you’re done. You have an hour before we offer this to our next reserve.”
He turned to leave, but Corey needed to ask one thing.
“If we say no, does that mean one of us alone would become the wildcard?”
Hope sat in his chest, and he willed the man to say yes.
The producer checked his clipboard and shook his head. “No. It’s all or nothing, because we have a girl up on second reserve if you decide you want to call it a day.”
Silence.
The cameras left; the door shut.
Angel shook his head, Puppy cursed loudly, Skinny thumped the wall, and Double K burst into tears.
And all Corey could do was stand there and use every available ounce of energy to focus on what the hell had just happened.
Great.

RJ Bio, Reviews, Book List

My goal is to write stories with a heart of romance, a troubled road to reach happiness, and most importantly, that hint of a happily ever after.

I've has been writing since age six, when I was made to stay in at lunchtime for an infraction involving cookies and the mixing bowl. You can't tell a six year old not to lick the bowl!

I was told to write a story and two sides of paper about a trapped princess later, a lover of writing was born.

As an avid reader myself, I can be found reading anything from thrillers to sci-fi to horror. However, my first real true love will always be the world of romance. I love my cowboys, bodyguards, firemen and billionaires (to name a few) and love to write dramatic and romantic stories of love and passion between these men. (Yum)

With over 90 titles to my name and counting, I am the author of the award winning book, The Christmas Throwaway, which was All Romance Ebooks best selling title of 2010.

I'm also known for the Texas series charting the lives of Riley and Jack, and the Sanctuary series following the work of the Sanctuary Foundation and the people it protects.

I'm always so thrilled to hear from readers, bloggers and other writers. Please contact via the following links below:

The best writing advice I could ever give:

There are days where I don’t want to write. I know, I know, this comes as a total shock. But yes, it is a truth! Some days I don’t feel like writing one bit.

Sometimes it’s because I need a break, I feel burnt out, or I just had a long day and my brain is very tired. Those are all good reasons to step away from the keyboard for a little while. And usually I do, and I feel better for it. You sometimes need to refresh yourself, and that includes taking a writing rest.

Other times though, I’m just feeling lazy. I’m procrastinating. The plot has done something wiggly or my characters have decided to change things up on me  and I don’t know how to deal. And that’s the kind of thing that, if you put off the writing, you’ll keep putting off the writing. And then, and this is the worst part of all, nothing will get written so you’ll never get to see how the story ends.

I’m sure many of us would do quite a lot to prevent that.

The thing about writing, at least for me, is that the hardest thing to do is to get started. But once I do start, away I’m able to go. So my goal has, for a long time, been to write ten words. That’s all. Just ten words. No three-thousand word count minimum, no “have to finish this chapter” requirement. Ten words, and you’re done.

The trick is that chances are once you’re done writing those ten words, you’ll want to keep going. The story has started to flow again, and the plot is coming unstuck, the characters are listening to you, and that ten words becomes “maybe I’ll just try to break this next thousand” or “I’m pretty sure I’ve got the rest of this chapter in me.”

Sometimes it doesn’t work. Sometimes you write those ten words and you are done. And that’s okay too.

But start with ten. Ten more written words to exist in the world. And if you do get stuck again, try another ten. There’s not much that can go wrong with making your goal just ten more words.

And who knows how much you’ll end with!

Jaxon is getting by fine, severe dyslexia or not. Being a cab driver means he doesn’t need to read much, and the job has its perks. The pay isn’t bad, the people can be interesting, and having memorized the city streets keeps him from feeling too stupid.

When he picks up Caleb, a quiet fare in a nice suit, Jaxon doesn't think anything of it. Then he ends up driving Caleb home the next week too, and the next, and the next. Eventually Caleb tries to communicate—by writing things down. Turns out that Caleb has such a bad stutter he spends most of his time mute.

If only Jaxon had an easier time reading what Caleb had to say. But he’s interested in trying, and Caleb seems interested back. They discover that, with a little bit of effort, it isn’t so hard to make themselves understood. Especially when what’s growing between them is definitely worth talking about.

Stephanie GooglyEyes
When I read the blurb I knew I just HAD to read this book. One man with dyslexia and the other with a speech and stutter problem, I needed to know how that would work out.

Both men are so different, yet similar enough that they understand what the other needs, patience.

Jaxon is so sweet. He also seems resigned to the fact that he's "dumb" and takes it in stride. Caleb sees him though, and sees how smart he really is. He also shows Jaxon the other ways that makes a person smart.

Jaxon gives Caleb the attention and "ear" he deserves. He doesn't judge Caleb for his stuttering and even goes so far to learn ASL for him, which blows Caleb away.

With new technology, things like speech-to-text and an ASL translating phone, these 2 guys have no problem physically communicating. They now just need to learn to get past their nerves an emotionally communicate.

My only complaint, this book isn't long enough. I would love to read more about Caleb and Jaxon.

I give this a 4*

E.Lo the Book Ho

This book is short and sweet, and so will my review be.

This is one of those books that just kinda touches your heart. Two guys with disabilities that they have learned to overcome in their day to day lives. But when it comes to overcoming them together as a couple, there could be a problem. Jaxon can’t read due to being severely dyslexic, and Caleb not comfortable talking due to a severe stutter the odds seem stacked against them. Thanks to modern technology, with text-to-speech, ASL videos online, and a lot of patience, they make it work.

And like my partner in crime...I need more Caleb and Jaxon!!!!

I have to say for a debut novel, Aidan Wayne knocks it out of the park. I can’t wait to read more from them.

4 Sweet Stars from me!

About Aidan Wayne

Aidan Wayne is a big believer in character-driven stories with happy endings. This is not to say that stories can’t contain a little (or a lot) of grief, just that at the end of it all expect there to be bandages and hugs. They particularly like to write about minority characters because damn it, they deserve happy endings too.

When not writing, Aidan enjoys practicing aerial, martial arts, and ASL, and watching reality cooking shows. They are probably in the middle of twelve projects as you read this.

THE CALL
Present Day

DEREK PEARSON PUSHED open the door of Leighton, Finley & Associates, and stepped out on the paved sidewalk. It was the first day of August, and if the sweltering Floridian sun was any indication, today was going to be hotter than hell’s waiting room. As he strolled toward the curb, he pulled a pack of Marlboros from the pocket of his shorts and flipped open the top. He needed a fucking cigarette after watching Daniel Finley and his damn professor get all sappy and shit. That was gonna get old real quick if he had to stomach their nauseating displays of I love yous longer than the fifteen minutes he’d been in there. But he’d known he had to make an appearance sooner or later; otherwise Danny boy would’ve shown up asking questions. Questions he wasn’t ready to answer. There’d been a reason he hadn’t come around to see Finn when he first moved back from Chicago two months ago, but it wasn’t something he was in the mood to talk about yet, even if he was one of the two people on the planet who would get all the shit he’d been dealing with. Yeah… He just wasn’t ready to go there. With a smoke between his lips, he lit up, then shoved the pack back in his shorts. He was so damn antsy lately, and for that he could thank his brother, Alan. He walked around to the side of his Jeep and pulled open the door. After climbing inside, he grabbed his cell phone and stared at the dark screen, contemplating his next move. Am I really planning to do this? Fuck, it seemed that he was, even when he knew better. If he did this, it would be nothing more than a Band-Aid over the real problem. A shot to numb the more painful issues he was dealing with right now. He would be slipping back into a pattern he had pulled himself out of. An addiction he’d broken free from. But he was also aware that if he didn’t do it, the alternative would be to spiral out of control, and solitude was no longer helping his fucked-up nerves. He brought the phone to his ear and waited. The phone rang and rang, and fucking rang, until he was close to hanging up—and then it connected. “You free?” were the only two words out of his mouth. He waited, not caring to pursue small talk. That wasn’t what this was about. All he cared about in that moment was getting what he needed. When an affirmative came through the phone, he hung up, tossed it on the dashboard, and brought the Jeep to life. As he sped across town, he white-knuckled the steering wheel and didn’t allow himself to think about the consequences of what he was about to do. It took him less than ten minutes to pull into the underground parking garage of The Palisades and take the elevator up to where his drug of choice waited for him. He glanced up into the camera in the corner of his metallic confines and stared boldly into the face of the one who was waiting at the other end of this ride. Yeah, he was about to fall off the fucking wagon big time. Was about to slide back into the one place he promised himself he wouldn’t go again. Yet as the elevator came to a halt and the doors opened, there was no denying this was exactly what he wanted. “I have thirty minutes,” were the words that greeted him. Derek walked off the elevator and over to the naked man waiting for him. He took the haughty chin between his thumb and forefinger and promised in a voice thick with arousal, “I only need ten. Take me to your room, Jordan. Time’s a wasting.”

Devil’s Kiss by Ella Frank

Devil’s Kiss by Ella Frank was a complete surprise.  In book one, Finley, you get to meet Professor Devaney, aka Jordan, and Finn’s best friend, and Derek Pearson.

Derek is this huge “muscle head” who you assume is this big “bad boy”. Man, is that so stereotypical?
Jordan, don’t get me started on him. In book one i thought he was this HUGE diva.

Book one, you knew there was something going on, and me personally, I kind of thought Derek was some sort of “daddy” to Jordan. You know, big muscle guy taking care of his “boy” ((ps I love that sh*t)). So I was super excited to read book 2, in hopes that that is what was happening

Maaaan, that couldn’t have been further from the truth. And I was totally OK with that

This book starts basically in the same “decade” as Finley.

This is the similarities between the two books. They run around the same times, hopping between past and present ((which totally floats my boat)) and the fact that both these boys have fallen for their professors? On top of the emotional whiplash that happens in both books. One minute you’re biting your nails hoping they unf*ck their shit, and the next you’re breathing a sigh of relief. But, this is where the similarities end. None of these characters are the same in ANY way.

I ended up LOVING Jacob. Was he  spoiled brat? Yes. He even admits it, but it’s in the way he delivers it all and carries himself that you can’t help but love him. Basically, he’s the quirky light to Derek’s life.

Derek is an anomaly as well. Coming from a horrible background, he’s determined to be so much more than his family. He does what he does in spite of everyone and he dares you to doubt him.

Find what makes you work the hardest, and dare yourself to make a difference”

It’s something you as a reader will fall in love with as well as Jordan. He was Jordan’s “challenge” and what a challenge he was.

Even their bedroom preferences will throw you off. And I find that to be the most endearing and probably one of my favorite things about this book. Basically, expect the unexpected and stereotypes, because they aren’t here.

So, buckle yourself in for this emotional rollercoaster full of surprises, and enjoy the ride.

Oh, and P.S I am really hoping book 3 is Dylan.I am VERY curious about him…but not before Thanos *cough, Ella, cough*

  Finley (Sunset Cove Series #1)
Finley-EllaFrank-CustomDesign-JayAheer2016-WM-Ebook-finalimage

It's time to come home, Finn.

It’s been seven years since Daniel Finley left his hometown in Florida for the hustle and bustle of Chicago’s city life. Since then, he’s worked hard for his position at the prestigious law firm Leighton & Associates, even when it’s caused distance and isolation from his family and friends. But that’s all about to change. On his thirtieth birthday, he receives the one thing he never dared hope for. Something that was promised to him years earlier—a note. One simple sentence from the man he’s never been able to forget. Six words will forever change the course of their lives. Brantley Hayes has it all. Or so he thinks. When he first made the decision to take a job down in Florida, his family thought he was crazy. But, after years of living in the quiet beach town, he finally feels a sense of community. He’s surrounded himself with friends who are like family, has a job he loves, and owns a spectacular beachfront property that is his sanctuary. Yet he still feels unfulfilled, as if a piece of the puzzle is missing, and he knows exactly which piece it is. On an impulse, he follows through with a promise he made years earlier. A promise to call home the one he sent away. Nothing is as simple as it seems. After years of separation, the former lovers are reunited, but Brantley wasn’t expecting to encounter the high walls now guarding Daniel’s heart. Daniel may not be the same person he was when he left, but he knows that the first step to healing is the note in his hand.

REVIEW OF FINLEY
If you're missing Tate and Logan, definitely pick up this book!!!

Daniel and Brantley light up the pages, between their connection both emotionally and physically. There's a lot of hurt but also a lot of love. It's actually quite bittersweet. Daniel even adapts a "Loganesqueness" to him that's sure to melt you from the inside out. Not only that but with his professor? *gasps* ohh, the scandal! ;) But not really, it's just a pretty hot fantasy!

The writing is what I've come to love about Ella. Not only does she tell the story in present tense, but she does these flashbacks of Finn and Brantley's story that just gives it a whole other emotional dimension and connection with the characters.

All I can say is this is classic Ella and another great book from her and I'm super excited to learn more about Jacob and Derek...pllleeeaaase let there be more Jacob and Derek. Oh yeah and me mentioning if you miss Tate and Logan, well, read the book, you'll see ;)

and on that bombshell...4.5*

Author Name: Julie Lynn Hayes
Book Name: Bad Dogs and Drag Queens
Series: Rose and Thorne
Book: One
Release Date: May 25, 2016

Blurb:

Vinnie Delarosa and Ethan Thorne are partners—on and off the clock. Federal undercover detectives, they’re part of a covert task force designed to promote goodwill between the feds and local authorities. They lend an unobtrusive helping hand wherever it’s needed. No credit required.
Vinnie and Ethan work primarily in the Southeast region of the United States and live together in Richmond, Virginia. A mugger problem brings them to Roanoke, where Vinnie is thrown out as bait to catch the man who’s been snatching purses in a city park, but they end up with more than they bargained for. Why is Vinnie always the one who has to wear the dress? Ethan says it’s because Vinnie looks much prettier in a skirt. How can he argue with that?
Expecting to return to Richmond afterward, Vinnie and Ethan find themselves assigned a new case instead. They are to go undercover at The Stroll, one of the biggest gay nightclubs in Roanoke. Someone is terrorizing both the customers and the performers. Could they be dealing with a hate crime? Someone has to protect the drag queens of Roanoke, so it’s Vinnie and Ethan to the rescue!

Excerpt:

“Remind me again whose stupid idea this lipstick was,” I huffed under my breath. Without thinking, I licked my lips. They felt greasy, and tasted even worse. I forced myself not to grimace, afraid it might crack the foundation I’d slathered on my face.
“Mine, you sexy beast,” came the smart-ass reply in my ear. “I think you got purty lips, mmhmmm.”
“Fuck you,” I growled. “You should be doing this, not me, and you know it. I did it last time.”
And the time before that. And the time before that. Wait, did I detect a pattern here?
“What I know is you look better in a skirt than I do. And you look damn good out of it too.”
My cheeks filled with heat at Ethan’s words. Luckily the darkness hid a multitude of sins, my embarrassment being the least of them. Hopefully, no one else was listening—I knew I’d never hear the end of it. Just what I needed—to be the object of ridicule of the Roanoke PD.

REVIEW

Take this book for what it is, a quirky, silly, romantic, undercover cop story.

Both partners in life and on the job, Vinnie and Ethan are federal agents working in a special task force to bridge the gap between local PD and Feds.

Their first assignment is to try and find a mugger focusing on woman. Vinnie is the one who has to dress up as the woman, and it isn't his first time, apparently. I thought it was pretty hilarious, listening him complain about his shoes and everything. It was Evan more endearing when Ethan helped him out afterwards, always taking care of him. What more, the not only catch the perp but his "little helper" too.

Enter the "bad dog".

They both take a liking to this little guy and Ethan goes as far as to naming him.
Once that mission is over, their boss immediately has another mission for them at the local gay bar which features a line up of drag Queens. Someone has been targeting the club and the workers.
Vinnie and Ethan must go undercover as employees. Ethan as a bartender and Vin as the newest entertainment, Boom-Boom Santiago.

A string of things happen, some funny, some not so much. But Vin is always entertaining.

I loved the banter between Vin and Ethan. You can tell how much they care for each other, even if Vin seems a little unsure at times. He seems to have a bit of a dramatic flair, regardless of complaining about having to be a Queen. I like the dynamics between them and the newly acquired dog.

I felt there was a bit of a loop hole between what was happening at the club and why the perp was doing what they were doing, but all in all it was still n entertaining story..

3.75 fabulous stars for Vinnie and Ethan

I am obsessed, I mean OBSESSED, with all things drag queens. So when I was given the opportunity to review this book I may have let out a slight squeal.

This book starts out with two undercover special agents helping the local Roanoke PD look for a purse snatcher. What better way to look for said thief is to be a purse carrying, skirt wearing "woman". When Vinnie, dressed to the nines, goes for a stroll in the park he is tripped and comes face to face with a cute little Pekingese. Of course as luck would have it, out comes the purse snatcher. As Vinnie is wrestling with said snatcher, in comes Ethan, Vinnie's partner (in more ways than one).  After the arrest they find themselves taking home sweet little Benny for the night. They soon find out that the sweet little pup belongs to the snatcher and is actually his accomplice. When the snatcher decides he no longer wants the pup, the guys decide to make him part of their family.

After a few days off, Ethan and Vinnie, are assigned to a new case to help the local PD once again. This time its to help find the person responsible for assaulting not only some of the patrons, but also some of the fabulous Queens at a local gay bar. Once again Vinnie must don the dress and wig and pull out his inner Queen.

This is such a cute, funny and kinda hot read. I cant wait to see what else Ms. Hayes has in store for these guys.

Meet the author:

Julie Lynn Hayes first began publishing short stories and poetry in the 1990’s, when it was a different ballgame altogether, and Ebooks hadn’t been dreamed of yet. That changed in 2010 with the acceptance of her first romance novel. She’s come a long way since that first book appeared, and is finding the journey a very educational one.
She lives in St. Louis with her daughter Sarah and her cat Ramesses. She often writes of two men finding true love and happiness in one another’s arms, and is a great believer in the happily ever after. She likes to write in different genres, to stretch herself in order to see what is possible. Her great challenge is to be told something can’t be done—she feels compelled to do it.
When she isn’t writing, she enjoys crafts, such as crocheting and cross stitch,  needlepoint and knitting, and she loves to cook, spending time watching the Food Network. Her favorite chef is Geoffrey Zakarian. Her family thinks she’s a bit off, but she doesn’t mind. Marching to the beat of one’s own drummer is a good thing, after all.                                                Interview
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Julie Lynn Hayes,  author of Bad Dogs and Drag Queens.  Hi Julie, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

 Describe your book to us.

Bad Dogs and Drag Queens is about two federal undercover cops who are partners on the job and off, Vinnie Delarosa and Ethan Thorne. They’re twenty-six years old, and have been together almost five years. They’ve been living in Richmond, Virginia, for about two years, but their job takes them to nearby Roanoke to help with a mugger situation. After that, they’re given another assignment at The Stroll, a gay nightclub in Roanoke, and Vinnie finds he has to get into drag again.

Basically, it’s a love story, more than a police story.

Have you ever read something that made you think differently about your genre? Can you tell us what it was?

I can’t think of anything. I’ve read books in the genre that I didn’t care for, but that doesn’t reflect on the genre, just on the book. One of the first m/m books I read that made me realize m/m stories could be more than just erotica was Male Model.

Tell us about your character’s family life?

Vinnie has no family life, his mother died when he was a young man. He never met his father. Ethan is his only family now.

Compare yourself to your main character.

Vinnie and I have similarities. We both have insecurities, thinking we’re not good enough. We’re both sarcastic and snarky. He’s prettier than I am J He was slower to fall in love than I was, I fell too young and too quickly. He’s more of a diva than I am.

Describe your past week as a type of landscape or a weather forecast.

Does cloudy with a chance of meatballs work?  Lol  J/k

This past week was mostly smooth sailing and clear skies, although occasional clouds darkened the horizon, and today a squall threatened. But it dissipated, hopefully not to return, and everything is sunny once more.

Thanks for having me here today!
